Today, katedrála Saint-Maurice je jednou z hlavných atrakcií Angers, národná kultúrna pamiatka a centrom diecézy Angers.

Historie a architektura

Classified as a historical monument since 1862, it has undergone several reconstructions after fires in the 11th century.
In the 16th century, Jean Delespine added Renaissance elements to the towers, topped with spires erected in 1518 and 1523.
A new contemporary fiber-reinforced concrete porch will be inaugurated in April 2026.
The western portal, dating from 1150, is inspired by Chartres and depicts biblical scenes and saints.

They showcase a remarkable ensemble of 12th-, 13th-, and 15th-century stained glass windows.
Visitors passing through can also admire its 12th-century columns and ribbed vaults in Angevin Gothic style, galleries of figures representing Saint Maurice’s companions and 14th-century knights, as well as two spires dating from the 16th century.
Listed as a Historic Monument, the Cathedral of Saint Maurice particularly delights lovers of religious art with its mid-18th-century baroque gilded wooden baldachin high altar, inspired by that of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome.

Monument in Angers
Built at the beginning of the 11th century by Bishop Hubert de Vendôme, the Cathedral of Saint Maurice of Angers, in Maine-et-Loire, originally took the form of a Romanesque-style building with a single nave.
Completely destroyed by a fire in 1032, barely completed, it was restored in the following years.
Transformed over the centuries, it later became one of the jewels of Gothic architecture, while retaining from its original structure the basic walls of the nave.
